Folklore: In ancient Greece, the pine was sacred to Dionysus/Bacchus mythology surrounding the vine and wine making, most probably as a fertility symbol. The Corinthians, were ordered by the Delphic Oracle to worship the pine along with Dionysus as a god. As a symbol of royalty the pine was also associated with the Greek goddess Pitthea.  The pine was the sacred tree of the Mithraic cult in ancient Rome. During the Roman holiday of Saturnalia (Dec. 17-25th), they would decorate pine trees with ornaments (made in the image of Bacchus) such as oscilla, and little clay dolls known as sigillaria. For the Romans the pine was worshiped during the spring equinox festival of Cybele and Attis. Because it was an evergreen tree the pine would have symbolised immortality.
